Tolerance: a Virtual Monument to Friendship
For Pierre Restany

After nearly thirty-five years of deep admiration and loyal friendship, after countless steps forward and works developed from his proposals, or projects for new exhibitions, my ‘memory drawer’ was bound to contain a work done for and with Restany. That work is now transformed into: a Virtual Monument to Friendship. The title was an ironic metaphor of tolerance between an inveterate smoker and an artist suffering from asthma. But its significance is of course much wider than that. Together with ‘Peace’, ‘Tolerance’ is the key word today for a better coexistence and acceptance of habits, customs and tastes in such a rapidly changed and globalized world. ‘Tolerance’ is a fundamental word at all levels of human values and endeavour. Pierre Restany knew that well. Busy as he always had been, travelling around and analysing the world, from Rio Negro to Tokyo, from America to Australia, Paris and Milan, smoking afforded a good pretext for talking about tolerance among men through Art. Now that he has gone, my feeling is that he will never actually leave those who unravelled with him the intricate skein of life and art, and of the philosophy of merging the two together, of which he was an able master. I have redeveloped those gestures, of pleasure on the one hand and suffering on the other, in the name of friendship; and I feel that this little installation filters its innermost meaning and is transformed, as if by a miracle, into a truly Virtual Monument to Friendship in life and to ‘Tolerance’.

Tolerance: Monumento virtuale all’amicizia
